Jud Brewer, MD, PhD (“Dr. Jud”) is a New York Times best-selling author and thought leader in the field of habit change and the “science of self-mastery”, having combined over 20 years of experience with mindfulness training with his scientific research therein. He is the Director of Research and Innovation at the Mindfulness Center and associate professor in Behavioral and Social Sciences and Psychiatry at the Schools of Public Health & Medicine at Brown University. He is also the executive medical director of behavioral health at Sharecare Inc. and a research affiliate at MIT. Dr. Briscoe-Smith earned her undergraduate degree from Harvard University. She then received her clinical psychology Ph.D. from University of California Berkeley. She then went on to continue her specialization in trauma and ethnic minority mental health through internship and postdoctoral work at University of California San Francisco/San Francisco General Hospital. She has combined her love of teaching and advocacy by serving as a professor and by directing mental health programs for children experiencing trauma, homelessness or foster care. Much of her work has been with schools, as a clinician, consultant and trainer. Currently she is the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at the Wright Institute where she is a professor. Paul Gilbert, FBPsS, PhD, OBE is Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Derby and honorary visiting Prof at the University of Queensland. Until his retirement from the NHS in 2016 he was Consultant Clinical Psychologist for over 40 years. He has researched evolutionary approaches to psychopathology with a special focus on mood, shame and self-criticism in various mental health difficulties for which Compassion Focused Therapy was developed. He was made a Fellow of the British Psychological Society in 1993, president of the BABCP 2002-2004, and was a member of the first British Governments’ NICE guidelines for depression. He has written/edited 21 books and over 250 papers and book chapters. In 2006 he established the Compassionate Mind Foundation as an international charity with the mission statement: To promote wellbeing through the scientific understanding and application of compassion (www.compassionatemind.co.uk). There are now a number of sister foundations in other countries. He was awarded an OBE by the Queen in March 2011 for services to mental health. He established and is the Director of the Centre for Compassion Research and Training at Derby University UK. He has written and edited many books on compassion. His latest book is Living Like Crazy.

Monica Ramirez Basco, PhD is a clinical psychologist and Founding Fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. After receiving her Ph.D. at the University of Southern California she joined the faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center where she conducted NIH funded research on psychosocial intervention development, refinement, and dissemination. Dr. Basco later joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington where she was awarded the University of Texas Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award. From 2011-2017 Dr. Basco held various positions at the National Institutes of Health, including Associate Director for Science Policy, Planning, and Analysis at the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health. During her federal service she also served as Assistant Director for Neuroscience, Mental Health, and Broadening Participation at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. She received awards for her service from the NIH Director and from the Director of the NIH Center for Scientific Review. Dr. Basco has been involved at the national level in efforts to strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion in the STEM workforce and she currently serves on the Board of Directors of SACNAS – the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science. Dr. Basco has published 10 books in 17 difference languages and, along with her co-authors, was awarded the 2009 British Medical Association Mental Health Book of the Year award.
